Hey guys! So after some time in the military you always like to do research. Well I came across the topic geographical bachelor. After I graduated Ait I married my husband who was then in ait. I got to my duty station and was told I couldn’t get a house or bah because I was a geographical bachelor, WHAT MADE ME A GEOGRAPHICAL BACHELOR? And why wasn’t I considered duel military... it’s under my understanding that if you want to be a geographical bachelor ie you have children trying to complete school, you have a good career progression going that you must file for it.... so if I never filed for it why was I given geographical bachelor and got 7 dollars for BAH. They denied me a home in the barracks because I was married they denied me a home because I wasn’t drawing BAH and I couldn’t draw BAH until I got my husbands dd214 why wouldn’t I receive my bah for being duel military? I see couples all the time who have homes and their spouse is in ait... please if I could get some wisdom from the experienced soldiers in this or my ncos I would appreciate... AND. Can I go back and get that bah I did not receive?

If you are dual military and do not have children and are not located at the same location as your spouse you are considered a GEO Bach. It also depends on your duty station and or unit. Where I am located we have Geo Bachs and they live in the barracks and do not pull BAH. If you had kids or your spouse gets located with you, then you will move into a house and draw BAH. I am dual military and while I was in Basic and AIT I was not authorized BAH, now that I am located with my husband and children I receive partial rate.

So couples that don’t have children, and their spouse joins the military, they have to then become a geo Bach because they are separated by training?

Yes. We had this situation occur with a soldier in my unit. Finance was going to take back all the BAH from him from the time his spouse was in Basic and AIT. He had to do exception to policy memo to allow him to stay in his house since his spouse was on orders to the same location and it made no sense for him to move out of housing for a few weeks.

There was an ALARCT Message that came out eliminating Geographic Bachelor either at the beginning of this year or the end of 2017. All married dual military will draw BAH and cannot live in the barracks. I posted it a couple of months ago. I’ll try to find it again and re-post. Unfortunately your S1 and/or chain of command isn’t aware of this change.
