I learned early on in my career that it is never permissible to wear a civilian hat or ball cap of any kind inside of a hospital. It goes back to having respect for the sick and deceased. Along the same lines it is also never permissible to wear a ball cap or hat while in a mess hall.

Outside of the military headwear, I have never heard of this and that is even as a Marine/Navy brat.

I remove a hat during meals if I happen to be wearing one, but I had never heard of taking it off in a hospital. As a DOD Civilian now, and Retiree, I make every attempt to uphold my values and continue to serve with pride.

- For the military, covers are only worn indoors when under arms.
- For service workers, wearing head gear may be required for sanitary purposes.
- Other than the above two reasons, head gear should not be worn indoors, especially in hospitals or mess halls.
