Wonder how many this will impact and how many will be caught unaware when they get their notice?

This strikes me as reasonable.

For deployments (contingency and/or Korea), If you aren't going to be around long enough into the deployment to be of value, you aren't going to be of value. The train-up you get for the deployment will be wasted AND your replacement will have to be trained at a later date, come in as an individual replacement, and take some amount of time to integrate. Also, if you have less than 12 months left on your enlistment, it is going to be hard to integrate you into any new formation before you would start out processing anyway.

For inactivating units, it's really just the last bit - it makes no sense to integrate you into a new formation just so you can start to outprocess.

Mind you, one of the dangers of a one size fits all policy is that there are always special circumstances. I can think of plenty of ways to maximize the use of a MSG, a SFC, and 8 SPCs at JBLM on an ad hoc manner... Of course, that isn't how we are supposed to do personnel management - and the Army isn't set up to do it (and won't be until long after the next build up....).

As an added bonus, we immediately look better on our draw-down stats.
(that last was sarcasm)

Wow, I guess they are really trying to cut back on our forces. I hope that good soldiers that can still add value aren't removed. Even though our bodies aren't as great as they used to be, there is still a lot of experience and skill they can offer.

This policy was in effect last year as well, but I had not realized that.
