Is it appropriate to counsel a solder who is being told to do SSD without being given adequate time to do it during work?

Can you Council a solder who is being told to do ssd, he was told on Saturday and told to have it by 06 Monday if not he will have to be counseled on it. The is married and live off post something I was tracking was it was on the unit who has to give you adequate time to do it during work ?

Yes, Soldiers are supposed to be given time during the duty day to work on SSD. This was outlined, I believe, in ALARACT 288/2010. Can SSD be completed in the amount of time given....certainly, as long as they forego anything else in life and do nothing but SSD all day and all night. But to realistically expect a married Soldier living off post the complete SSD between a Saturday and 0600 Monday is a tad nuts. Can a Soldier be counselled for not completing it? Certainly, as they were given a directive. HOWEVER.....is it appropriate? No in my opinion.

You can counsel anyone on anything. SSD is self selecting and doesn't require your counseling or benefit from it. If the SM doesn't complete their SSD in a timely manner they will receive an DA initiated Bar to reenlistment. If they don't finish it within a year from that they will be separated.
Whether the SM had time to do it at work will be irrelevant when that year hits.

Perhaps I wasn't clear, as I understood what you said, as, "DA initiates a bar, based on a time frame". I understood the guidance, from the ALARACT, that a local commander initiates this bar.

I am not seeing the total picture here. How long have they been enrolled? That aside, SSD 1 or 2 is NOT hard and can be completed in a reasonable amount of time if the Soldier puts forth some effort. So what if they live off post and they are inconvenienced for a weekend? Are we supposed to give them a teddy bear to hug too?

I agree with MSG (Join to see) I completed it within a day. Yes, it took the whole day for 0600 to 2000 but it was completed. I told my wife it had to be done because it was directed by our 1SG and well that's what I did. The next day we went to Texas Roadhouse in Savannah to celebrate.
