I ask this, because it seems that a lot of current Veterans do not know what the VFW can do for them. It seems that the biggest question asked is "What will the VFW do for me?" Well, as a Life Member of the VFW, that takes us by surprise. I know that a lot of VFW Posts have members still from WWII. And I know that some may have an aversion to smoking inside a facility (in states that have smoking bans in restaurants and bars, the VFW is exempt). But I want to hear you opinions on this.

If you have served in a War Zone, if you are not a member, are you considering joining?

Excellent question and since I've recently moved, it's a great reminder for me to get involved with my local post out here.

For me, every VFW I've ever visited and joined has been very welcoming.

Life member but currently at large.   I think I've found a post to affiliate with but I need to get off my butt and put the paperwork in.  I think part of the problem is the younger generations feel that the VFW (and other associations) are for the WWII Vets and they want something of their own.  Doesn't mean that the can't help steer it where they want it to go but they need to join first...

My sentiments exactly. That is why they have formed the Iraq Afghanistan Vets group. Because they think that. That is why we need to inform them that the VFW is there for them. And is willing to help them. Especially with the VA.

I just joined the VFW and so far I have no reason to talk anyone in to joining.  I'm sure there are some people doing good things somewhere but my local VFW is just a place to store old drunk vets.

I'm impressed SPC! You're absolutely correct! Those up-armored vehicles are partly a result of veterans demanding we get more than sandbags to protect our butts down range.
