I know there have been some other threads on SSD here, but none that I have found really ask the whole question.
Is it worth it, or just another box to check? I hear "you get out of it what you put into it" a lot. I know that's true. Here is the issue. We are now required to complete this really long distance learning course, often on our own time. The modules are riddled with glitches and errors so the already painful task becomes exponentially difficult. You know that your buddies just clicked through it to check the blocks, you want to have some integrity and do it right. There is no method for determining who really wanted to better themselves. And no incentive for anyone to do so. It is Go/No-Go. In fact, the SM who clicks through may get rewarded for completing it right away. I have known Soldiers to complete SSD 1, 3, and 4 in 2 days. (When you could still self enroll). Especially for the NG, when you complete your promotion packet you get put ahead of someone else because you look better on paper because you have no integrity. Seems a little unfair to me.
Should SSD be a requirement, or should you get extra points for completion? If you get points, how do you ensure that the SM took the time to learn and not just cheat the system? Thoughts?
