Say you get the opportunity to go back active duty army but you have some financial issue like 120 days miss pay on a few credit card one collection a a charge off loan but you are working with a credit counselor/agency to fix the issues so for all debts are consolidate and making a one time payment monthly while the credit counselor is negotiating a settlement to pay of all debts would that affect my chance of being accepted back on active duty ?

The only it may have an impact on you is if you are required to have a clearance for your job, especially a top secret. Good luck to you...

You should be fine. Like others have said it will effect your clearance. That being said it doesn’t automatically keep you from getting your secret clearance. Just explain yourself and be honest when you are interviewed.

... kind of. Explain yourself, be honest, and HAVE A PLAN. When looking at financial issues for a clearance, the big deal is whether or not you have finances under control. If you have missed payments in the past, and even collection, bu you are NOW in good standing, with a plan to fix the issues and a history of made payments NOW, then you are good. Just explaining you had issues doesn't satisfy that the issues are resolved.

The big concern is that people with financial issues are vulnerable to exploitation by a foreign adversary, both through financial manipulation (bribes) and blackmail (threats to turn you over to your CoC or even to turn you over to your creditors). You have to be able to demonstrate that these financial issues are being resolved and do not leave you vulnerable for exploitation.

You'll have to provide documentation that you have a plan in place to pay the debt. You won't be able to have a job that requires a security clearance.
