HOUSE BILL 250
By Hawk
AN ACT to amend Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 58, Chapter 3, relative to veterans’ service offices.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE:
SECTION 1. Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 58-3-111, is amended by deleting the first sentence in subsection (c) and by substituting instead:
All veterans’ service officers shall be honorably discharged veterans of the United States armed forces, unless otherwise approved by majority vote of the governing body or bodies of the political subdivision or subdivisions creating the veterans’ service office by which the officer is to be employed.
SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon becoming a law, the public welfare requiring it.

This proposed amendment would allow a dishonorably discharged veteran to be the one that represents another veteran with their service-connected disability claims if approved by the majority vote of the governing body. I personally don't like the idea of someone who was dishonorable in the service of this great country representing any of my fellow veterans who honorably gave all. Showing that you honorably served should be a permanent standard in the requirements of any veterans service officer.
These are my thoughts, please feel free to share yours.

I'm sure the intent isn't to allow a veteran with a dishonorable discharge to serve as a veterans' service officer, it is to allow non-veterans to serve in that position. There has been similar legislation that people have attempted to pass here in Wisconsin recently where we require county veteran service officers to be honorably discharged veterans as well. So far it has been shot down here pretty firmly.
