I hate to sound mercenary, but money talks and BS runs the marathon. If there were a challenging position available and the compensation was right, I would consider it. Heck, if companies can get vets to work in armpits like Afghanistan, you can get someone anywhere for the right compensation package.

Agreed, Marcus!

In my former role as the State of Ohio's ONLY Veteran and Employer Outreach Specialist (in any of our 88 counties) with the Cuyahoga County, Ohio Veterans Service Commission, part of my mission was to educate employers about our total value package. My work has continued since leaving that role, and as a board member with http://www.neovets.org, and new business owner helping veterans get jobs throughout northeast Ohio (NEO), I continue to maintain relationships with area companies and organizations that support military and their families. I am also the organizer for the Cleveland Hiring Our Heroes program sponsored by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The goal of NEOVETS is to ramp up the economy in NEO by educating employers about the total value package that our veterans (and even their spouses) bring to the region. We also aim to recruit talent who would have otherwise chosen to move elsewhere upon separation.

I conceived the notion about having this region develop its first-ever "Certified Military Friendly Employer" program, and we hosted a training event on 30 Sep 2014 that was approved for Continuing Education Units (CEUs) with the Human Resources Certification Institute (HRCI).

We hope to highlight the newly certified companies at the next hiring Our Heroes event (Date/Venue yet TBD).

So, there you have it. That's why I posted this poll. I want my fellow board members from the Cleveland Clinic, Cuyahoga Community College, the American Red Cross, Case Western Reserve University, et al, to know how to attract you!

You should know that Cleveland is on a serious upswing right now, and we want you and all veterans (active, reserve or guard) to know about our available education, employment, world-class health care and volunteer opportunities, not to mention the other cultural aspects, sports, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Great Lakes Science Center, Art, Natural History, and Childrens Museums, and the list goes on.

Connect with me here and on LinkedIn by using [login to see] to get started. Visit my website at http://www.gunnyret.com and let's see what we can do about getting you here for a visit. FYI, I don't EVER charge a veteran or spouse for assistance in finding employment. You've paid enough!

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your candid remarks.

I don't know about the job market there but my father's side of the family is from there. I love visiting because it's beautiful. The people are very friendly. They have honor system vegetable stands on the sides of the road. There's cedar point which is the best roller coaster park in America. Would be easier to go see Ohio state Buckeyes play. ( love them). I guess it depends what skills you possess from the military and what is your education. Agriculture is huge there with big corn and big soy. It's worth looking into agriculture for work.

No way. I grew up in Lake County, Ohio. 45 mins Northeastof
Cleveland. The weather sucks there and the jobs are not there at all. Cleveland Clinic is great. The VA is a nightmare. I went into the Marines to get out of Ohio.

Congratulations, Jania!

You are living the dream, and I truly admire your passion for helping others. Glad to have you as another connection. Is Plexus hiring? I'd love to work with you/Plexus to add more veterans to the mix.

If you ever venture back this way, let me know. I'll buy you a drink.

BTW, if you know of any HVAC Techs, I'm currently recruiting!

Semper Fi!

I do come back to Ohio. In fact I am supposed to go at the end of the month but it is for a funeral. Yes, I would love to have you join my team. I would say call me but my phone is not working at all today and Verizon seems clueless. I will give you my personal email and to anyone else who wants to really change their lives. [login to see] . For the Havac techs where are the jobs in Ohio? What company? I have 2 people in mind but they both live in Lake County.

Here is the link to apply: http://www.gunnyret.com/?p=102

The company is Gardiner. Their CEO is either Navy Academy or West Point Grad. I can't recall at the moment. Gardiner is in Solon, but they work throughout the region.
