How does TLE work if your staying with family while waiting for your house on base at the incoming duty station?

We PCS in April to Fort Drum NY from Fort Knox KY. We have a family member who lives about 4 hours from base. We plan to stay with her until housing is ready for us. I figure we won’t get the lodging part of TLE but we should still get TLE for meals correct? If so how is that calculated. It’s Hubby,Myself and our 1 year old. Hubby is E4 but may be E5 by the time we PCS with 4 years of service if that matters. We are trying to avoid the Govt Travel Card. I have $5,000 put back for pro rated rent to move into housing,for pet deposit and related fees,For Gas money,for Food and for damages/move out costs of current duty station. I’m wondering roughly how much of the 5,000 will actually be reimbursed? Thank you.

Caitlin Williams USE THE GTC!!! That's what it is for. Don't use your own money. But here is the information available from DFAS.

He’s hoping to take leave for the 20 days before his report date so the 4 hours away shouldn’t be a issue but he can also stay at a hotel near base while me and my son stay with his aunt. I don’t do hotels because of my service dog and health needs. Housing isn’t more than a few weeks of wait because we are taking first available,we are not picky. I appreciate you explaining the GTC and I feel there will be no issues for us during the PCS.

Not sure how it changed since retired 3 years ago, but using the GTC was authorized but optional. I never used it!!!! I always budgeted before PCSing and file my vouchers, got 100% reimbursed. But that was me.

MAJ Javier Rivera - That is correct, sir. This is why I didn't say that the use was mandatory. However, it is also driven by local policies, and big Army is pushing for mandatory use.
