Can a person be a true patriot who never sacrifices for their country? I don't mean military service as the only means... but in some way sacrificing.

I believe those that support patriots are patriots in themselves. They may have not sacrificed by serving, but supporting our veterans, their families, and especially wounded ones deserved to be thanked!
I know some that disagreed with our policies but were vocal in their support for our soldiers, which is was happy to see.

Interesting definition, surely. I don't see it as being accurate, though. It is a pretty cynical definition. I can think of no one, on the left or right, who will blindly follow the government. Those on the left vehemently opposed Bush era policies. Those on the right vehemently oppose Obama era policies. Patriotism, even in common usage, is about the country and not the government in my experience.

Yes, my dad was red, white, and blue through and through! Never served in the military, but was one hell of a police officer.

I would say that a police officer sacrifices. My dad and both his brothers were police officers and they bore both risks and burdens that they didn't need to bear. Serving locally is still serving.

Great response 1SG Poe and MAJ Heaton. My dad was the most patriotic person I ever met. He was extremely disappointed that he was the infamous "4F"during the Vietnam War and was rejected as a volunteer: blind in one eye and didn't see all that well out the other, but was a true-blue patriot working as a steel factory worker for more than 40 years. He always love his country first and respected his country's military.
