Are you ETS’ing from the Reserves soon? If not you will need a conditional release from your unit, you will need to speak to a National Guard Recruiter as well. Also, keep in mind that since you’re an E5 your recruiter will need to find you a unit with an available E5 slot.

It is not a transfer because it is a different component. Requires an approved DD368 conditional release from the COS, USARC, with a DA4187 endorsement from your chain of command. Good Luck with that, it is hard enough for a USAR Soldier to get a conditional release approved to enlist Regular Army. Might be harder to justify your request to be released from your contract to enlist in another part time component. But, talk to your chain of command about the conditional release process and go from there. Be prepared for a lengthy wait for an answer.

I transferred from the ARNG to the reserves in 2012. The whole process took 3 months. Would have been much faster but my BN CO didn't want to let me go and refused to sign the DD368. He left, new CO signed it after a 5 minute convo and within a week I was in the reserves. Basically I was transferring because the guard wasn't promoting CPTs to MAJ and I found a reserve unit that would put me in an O4 slot and promote me. CO was being a douche because he had a personal grudge against me (I stood up to one of his buddies over a proposed policy that was illegal). The new CO had been my PL when I was an E5 and said, "I'll never stand in the way of someone getting promoted".
