there a TIG requirement to retire? For example if I made MSG at 19 years can I still retire at 20? Or will I need to stay in until 22 years?

Unless you want to retire as a SFC, you will need to be a MSG/1SG until you do 3 years at the E8 pay grade.

You can still retire at 20 and not keep the rank at retirement. But, HRC can also deny your retirement because you accepted the promotion. I just saw this happen a year ago for someone who accepted MSG and tried to retire. They denied it and said "strengths do not support" and sent him to Korea.
