Hello All, I was recently returned home due to a Red Cross message that my wife was suffering from preeclampsia and that she was having an emergency c section. My Chain has told me my Paternity Leave started when the baby was born from the c section. He also has been in the NICU for a week now. Wife is also still in the hospital and on medication for high blood pressure Do these factors affect my paternity leave? When does paternity leave start? After the baby is born or when the wife is discharged from the hospital?

It can start when the baby is born or when the baby leaves the hospital. You still have to submit the request for paternity leave because it isn’t automatic.

If you haven’t been at work, you command can make you take personal leave or start your paternity leave since your child has been born. What exactly is the situation? Have you been off since the birth?

I left work because I received a Red Cross message and I was told to go home and attend whatever my situation was. But unfortunately most of the beginning of my stay has been in the hospital with my child and wife.

That’s not maternity leave, that’s emergency leave, which is chargeable. Submit your request for your paternity leave otherwise if you don’t want to have your time off deducted from your leave balance. Also, read up on the new ALARACT MESSAGE that discuss Paternity Leave because you don’t have to take it right away. If you have a course of the ALARACT MESSAGE you won’t have to worry about your command forces you to take your leave the way they want you too versus you taking based upon what’s best for you and your family.PFC (Join to see)

You should have been put on emergency status leave prior to your departure, then once your Emergency was over and your wife and baby were out of the hospital then your paternity leave should have started, for you continue to take care of your wife and baby. I am no expert at this for I have been retired for several years
