I'm 6 months into a rating period, and this NCOER is looking pretty blank due to a civilian deployment. Can anyone shed light on how NCOERs in an incomplete rating cycle get treated when transitioning to the IRR? If I separate now, will this impact me negatively in the future? Retention might have a deal where I can extend a few months, drill in place during the off-hours of my deployment (for points, not pay), and have *something* in my eval if I decide to come back or drop a commissioning packet later.

You have two options I can see from the information you provided:
(1) Complete a close-out evaluation with start date the day after your last completed evaluation and end date the day you left for the deployment. You would not receive another NCOER until you returned from the IRR as IRR time is not covered in an evaluation.

(2) Complete an extended evaluation. Your time deployed with the civilian job would count as non-rated time in an extended evaluation. However, the thru date in an extended evaluation still needs to have 12 months of rated time. This means that in order to correctly submit your evaluation and not have it returned for error, you need a total of 12 total rated months, not including the non-rated time for your deployment.

Hey sir,

Roger that, and I feel like I need to provide a little additional context. The military leadership in my shop have offered to slot me as the NCOIC on a part-time/RST basis, since they will be without one indefinitely, and I've assumed about 90% of the operational duties as a civilian as it is. The other 10% of the duties are normal NCOIC bits (property accountability, personnel management, evals, etc.) which do not fall anywhere within my defined civilian duties. Basically, work the weekdays as a civilian, come in on the weekends and drill for points doing admin/accountability work. This is already being done for a contractor in another section. Any feedback that would come up as rated bullets would be sent to my home unit as a letter of continuity for my rater/reviewer (which is a separate issue altogether).

Question now becomes: should I just go IRR with a more-or-less blank NCOER covering the last 6 months, or take the extension, knock out some NCO duties on deployment, and then separate?
