Sure, there are plenty of Rangers who have done a few years and Regiment and then went to SF. Regiment will give you a solid base to build on and be successful in the future. They are not a natural progression from one to the other, and the mission sets, culture, and training mentality or approach are nothing alike. Ranger Regiment is like a scalpel that does one thing very, very well. SF is like a multi-tool that gets used for everything. Ranger Regiment is significantly smaller, with only about 3000-4000 personnel. SF by comparison has about 24000 green berets. This isn't an estimate, these are the actual numbers published by the Government Accounting Office. Both of these are entry level special operations units. So, you don't progress from one into the other, you progress by applying to other places like JSOC or an SMU.

I'm pretty shocked to learn there are that many 18-series guys floating around.

CPT (Join to see) there's a ridiculous amount of SF, but that also includes the NG SF as well. But there is also the SWC school house that is so large it is a two star command, huge S3 and training sections, numerous other detachment slots, SMUs, and various other liaison positions
