I just PCS’d from Hawaii to Ft. Drum with a report date of 20200210. From Hawaii, I did an extension of 14 months just to come to Ft Drum to meet the SRR since I was put on orders. My ETS from Ft. Drum is 20210324. The retention NCO in Hawaii advised me to extend and when I arrived to Ft Drum, I would be in my window to re-enlist. The retention NCO at Ft. Drum saw that an assignment at Ft. Sam Houston was available for me to take for four years but then later said I can’t re-enlist because the report date is before my 24 months time on station (20210210). I don’t have any facts and would appreciate some factual information. Thank you.

Then ask the Retension NCO for the facts. He or she is who you will be working through to make this happen, there only interest in this is your interest. Talk to them.

I spoke to my current retention NCO. Got the facts on 24 months. However, I disagree that all are in it for the interest of the soldier and are in it for their numbers. It would’ve been nice to know this before I signed anything in Hawaii instead of getting fed false information in which my family and I thought we made an informed decision.

Well, that would be the fault of the Battalion CSM who the retention NCO works for. They should have a finger on the pulse of their unit, and if NCOs are putting numbers before Soldiers they should not be NCOs. Sorry this happened to you. SGT (Join to see)

Sorry to double tap. As an NCO yourself, I hope you are reaching back to inform your former 1SG and CSM if the misinformation provided. And as always you should take these lessons and hold on to them for when you are a Senior NCO, so that you do not make the same mistakes as others. Be better. SGT (Join to see)

Thank you CSM. I will definitely keep this experience as well as others in mind to properly inform peers and subordinates.

The time on station rule for reenlistment is 24 months. The earliest report date for your next assignment can be no earlier than 202203. Your Career Counselor can still send a request for JBSA or another duty assignment with a requested report date of 202203 or later.
Your Career Counselor can show you the actual policy in writing if you like, and it's also published on Army Reenlistment as well.
