AN (Join to see) Your single largest determinant is being conditionally released from the Reserve Component, being otherwise qualified. Now, if you took one for the team, that could provide you some local political capital with your immediate command or which ever command level was charged with filling that IA. They may support your conditional release with the Flag Officer who reviews it for approval because you paid a "bill" they had.

I just went though the Conditional Release route after coming off a deployment. Going on a deployment will give you Active Duty time that you can roll over to your Active career which is good, but you will still have to put in a conditional release packet with your unit. I had to go through IG to get my release sent up, it took all in all about 7 months for it to be approved. I found that being a good soldier actually held up my process because my unit did not want to let me go. I was determined to go Active and did what I had to do with IG and I now ship to my first duty station in June! Good Luck!!

Well, I would always go to NPC (Navy Personnel Command) website first. Go to -->Enlisted -->Community Managers -->Aviation. There you can look up Aviation Structural Mechanic (AM) (or any rate you desire) Community Overview. Looking at Active Duty and Full Time Support (FTS), the only convert in opportunities are in Active Duty, which is what I think you are wanting. If you look at the slide, there are limited RC 2 AC (reserve to active) quotas available in CWAY. You need to check with your career counselor to see when you will be in your window to apply in CWAY.

You doing an IA or a Mobilization deployment may not really have any sway on if you can convert. If going active is your goal, then I encourage you to look at any rate that you may be interested in. As a career Navy Aviation Maintenance (enlisted and officer) professional, I highly encourage you to stay in Aviation, there are great opportunities here!
