How does he find out if he was accepted and about how long does it take to find out?

When the promotion orders are cut, if he was accepted, reassignment orders will get cut for the month after promotion. After reassignment, the vetting process will take place and if all things checked out, the unit will send the SGT to the DSA for DS qualification.

At least, that’s about what happened to me. I was already in a DS Unit and was reassigned out of the unit. But promotion came first.

The reassignment orders were issued because I selected “DS” and “will train” under the scope of not being DS qualified. The “will train” selection opened me up for any unit that EPMD decided to place me in because I “will train” to qualify for the position. I had the opportunity to stay in the DS unit but didn’t, accepted the reassignment and transferred to a different DS unit, went through the process of becoming a DS and now I work at the DSA.

Hopefully this helps.

My first tour as Drill Sergeant, I was an E-5 Sergeant and I just put in a Form 4187 requesting DS duty..poof next thing you know I am on orders.. My Second tour as DS, I got diverted from an original set of orders to 3rd ID, to go back to DS duty...wow that was a surprise..this time I went as an SFC E-7..but sure wasn't expecting to go back for a second tour. so I reported directly into OSUT unit as Senior Drill Sgt..they must have been really short of DS as we had some scum bags...just lazy DS..One in particular probably never did an actual month of real DS duty as he was always out of duty for this or that and sure dint like getting dirty ( what was he thinking..we were Infantry training)..he was also a Badge Collector...anything he could go to get a BADGE on his uniform...worthless for his partner when at the time you were lucky to have one Drill per platoon..and back then we ran from about 0400 am to 2330pm. seven days a week....thank GOD...there was no such thing as "time out"..lol
