You have just gone through OTS (or equivalent), gone through 4 years of medical school, we are going to pin Captain on and you're off!
Because the military pays for school for many physicians (and other educational experiences) many people join just to get school paid for. In doing this, they don't try very hard to learn about the military and often times comments are made that they are just "serving their time until they can get out." What things should they learn that would help them navigate this short time without making enemies, or what things might change their mind if they looked at it differently? (although I plan on staying in much longer than my required service, this has always been a question I think many could benefit from.)

Sports medicine... as a unit surgeon, part of your job is fitness of the force. Spend time at unit PT to assess the programs. Preventive maintenance saves knife time for most Soldiers.

SPC P K.,

Combat Arms Battalions have a PROFIS Battalion Surgeon slot that is filled by Physicians during culminating training events, and deployments. Being a part of the Unit at the point would only benefit them more. On the flip side of that, every Combat Arms Battalion has a Physician Assistant that is organic to the Unit. Some spend all of their time working in local TMCs, and some participate in training on a regular basis. Both areas benefit the Army from both a treatment view in the TMC area, and a prevention and education view in the Unit training environment. Non-medical Soldiers might not recognize the difference between the Physician and the Physician's Assistant as the fill mainly the same role-set in combat.

I don't think unit Physician Assistants should be spending much time learning the VA system...
