I just lost my home in a natural disaster. Can the VA help me replace my medications and medical devices?

Disasters happen, and often a lot of veterans are in those places where they happen. The VA will often go the base camp of where responders are, or a base camp for where evacuees are located and set up a place where they can start the process of getting VA supplied items replaced, it won't happen over night but in short order those items, if in stock will be sent out to your temporary location. It helps if you have your VA ID card, or other information. Keep in mind each VA facility may or may not have the capability to go out there. Don't expect/demand it. Staff at a base camp is staff away from the hospital, and many hospitals are stretched thin.

Yes the VA will replace them. You have to call the Doctor and have them place the order, then contact the Pharmacy to provide a temporary address.

Chief, As a emergency replacement of meds, see the ARC (American Red Cross) at any of the shelters they have established. You can receive assistance of medicine replacement and it might be a bit quicker than VA, They are equipped to help in a emergency situation. I pray your situation improves

Not really, if the items are in stock it can be replaced in a day or two. Items like wheel chairs, powered wheel chairs take a bit longer, but the process can be initialized in the field. I am not going to say every VA has the capability but many due, and put the mechanisms to assist in play as soon as possible.

Vets cannot get replacement meds from anyone other than the VA or they are in violation of their signed drug agreement and could lose their prescription rights for 2 years!! The Chief is correct in the way you have to deal with Veterans meds!

1. If you are displayed and living with others
- call your local VA that generally provides you with your meds/supplies. Let them know that you need an emergency supply.... Give them your temporary mailing address and request over night shipping.
2. If you are displayed in another city visit the local VA ER. They will provide you with an emergency supply.
3. If you are in a shelter visit the Red Cross section or let the team that comes around know, you need your meds and any equipment you need. (Some equipment may be considered non emergency and may require you to wait a little while.
4. If you are displaced and live in a hotel, call the VA.
Note: even if you are far away from the physical VA hospital still call your personal VA that traditionally provides your meds and let them know what's going on. This is called a notification. If you need any additional help.... Leave a message for your social worker.
