Ft. Gordon will be my first PDS. I am an officer bringing my wife and 2 [3rd on the way] kids.

Thoughts on on base housing options? As usual off post rent seems pretty much all BAH before utilities.

I am not a fan of the privatized housing however there are several things to consider. Ride motorcycles? They can screw with you on post. Lots firearms, same thing. There is some nice housing on post and generally safer neighborhoods but I would start exploring what is important to you, make a list, and go from there. I truly feel living on post is safer but there are also many more opportunities for the military to control your life. I have been Army for almost 30years so I am used to the BS and understand it well but you may not be. MPs driving past your house and stopping to tell you to wear a mask while cutting the grass because of COVID is something the locals will not do. Post Commander says you will wear over the ankle boots while you cut the grass, well you will do it. Again make a list of what is important and what is not and go from there.

Recommend tagging your post for Signal Corps So you actually get a wider response with direct experience.

Gordon is RCi managed, so you get Balfour Beatty Communities. The new housing will be built to contemporary standards. There are of course various complaints about maintenance response, maintenance actions taken, and problems like mold. That is any RCi or Government mananged housing across the services.

I think it will boil down to cost of utilities vs what you "gain" by being off post. There is also the commute and lease constraints.

Recommend you update your name to abide by the terms of service. Initials, nicknames, or other attempts to mask your identity will result in account deletion
