The Defense Secretary is calling for a reduction in the overall fighting force of the US Military. Â This plan, which has been approve by the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will reduce the overall number of uniformed personal to levels not seen since WWII. Â All of this is in effort to control the budget. Â
Do you think this reduction will help? Â What impact, if any, will there be if/when this country is attacked again? Â Is there any other way to reduce the defense budget even though 50% of it goes to personal-costs?
PS The use of the FoxNews article does not mean I condone or agree with the comments left on their page. Â This was just the article that came up in my Google News Feed.
Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel will reportedly propose a Pentagon budget that will shrink the U.S. Army to its smallest number since 1940 and eliminate an entire class of Air Force attack jets.Â

There will be no public outcry until the next conflict. But in the end, it is always the U.S. Service Member that pays the price for political short-sightedness.

I agree with SGT Daley-- read history and this is never a good idea. As a combat officer, I LOVE the A10! Nothing is better than looking up and seeing those beutiful birds crushing a tank. The new fighter plane is all about big contracts and money.

Secondly, what is the rest of the world doing? I remember hearing about how China isnt shrinking their military.... Americans don't remember on a world scale what it was like to lose a pitched battle. History not learned from is doomed to repeat itself, like right after WWI.

While focusing on technology is a good idea, what happens when a country jams our commumication and our drones are useless. Never rule out boots on the ground. We beat the governent of Iraq in 3 weeks of combat, but couldn't hold it for 10 years, and still have a massive amout of violence...

Warfare is first and foremost political; Wars are not won by technology but by boots and people on the ground. I agree that SOF has a key mission, it cannot fight a large pitch battle when the enemy has armor, tanks, and a tough determined enemy.
