My coworker and I made NCO in September. My supervisor said we had until December to finish DLC2 but right now he says it needs to be completed by this Friday. We are going to the field tomorrow morning and coming back Thursday evening which leaves little time to do this. They are threatening to bar us from reenlistment if we don't finish by Friday. Other NCOs have made much, much more time to finish. Is it allowed to bar someone from reenlistment for not doing DLC2 on such short notice? Please no answers about being on the radar, standing out, or being a team player. I do not fear retaliation by the organization.

No, the bar for failing to complete DLC is automatic and placed by HQDA. It is an 8K bar. The bar your commander can initiate is a 9K bar and completely different. If you don't complete your DLC in the correct amount of the the 8K bar is placed by HQDA and your commander has no input in the process.

SFC (Join to see) - yeah but this guy just got promoted in SEP. He shouldn't be on anyone's tracker yet. last I checked you had more than a couple of months to complete DLC2 once promoted. He's not even going to be board eligible for another 6-8 months and that's assuming he's got 82 months TIS. It's like threatening a newly commissioned 2LT because he hasn't completed BOLC after 2 months.

LTC (Join to see) yes the demand is absolutely ridiculous. It's like threatening to separate someone for scoring below a 210 on their APFT.

LTC (Join to see) - This is the only appropriate response.

You are a VERY new SGT. You do not NEED to complete DLC yet, or even anytime soon. You won't be in primary zone for quite a while, which is when it NEEDS to be completed by.

SSG (Join to see) - yep, sounds to me like someone in his chain has a hardon. Probably getting beat up because some MAJ/LTC at BDE has a metrics tracker and these guys are showing they haven't completed DLC 2 yet even though they just got promoted and don't need it for quite some time.

Lesson learned - don't procrastinate. Get that stuff knocked out asap. But since you didn't do that...

The only one who can initiate a bar to continued service (it appears it is no longer bar to reenlistment per Chapter 8; AR 601–280). Could the commander initiate one if recommended by your NCOs or the 1SG for not getting DLC 2 done? Could - is it likely? I don't know your commander.

You have had plenty of time to get this done. That's the bottomline. You have had since September to get it done. Why didn't you just do it then? In Sept, Oct or before this week?

Ask to talk to whoever is above your supervisor.

SGT (Join to see) - What's the difference between a deadline in November or December when you have had since September to get it done? Why not just have done it in September as soon as you got the notification that you were enrolled in it?

How about start on it now? Start it now and finish when you get back. I haven't ever done DLC so I don't know what it's like but I can't imagine it's worse than SSD or harder to get done.

If you have an issue with the supervisor go to the next higher to talk about it. Utilize open door policies. But your best bet would have been to get it done. Were you just going to wait until the day before it was due to start it?

I just don't get waiting to do it. Yeah I procrastinate - when I know I can. But when it's things like SSD/DLC, just knock it out asap. Get it over and done with and then you don't find yourself in situations like these.

SFC (Join to see) - the bottom line is he was given a deadline and then that deadline was pushed up by a month with only a few days notice. Regardless of whether or not this guy "should have" knocked this out in SEP or OCT, it is shitty leadership to make last minute changes for no apparent reason. It's not like this guy is going to be board eligible within the next 6-8 months.

LTC (Join to see) - That's why I said go to the next in line after his supervisor...but either way. It does matter that he had plenty of time to get it done. There's no excuse not to have had it done. It's mid November and they still don't have it done...and if it was due Dec?

Also - honestly they can't determine when DLC is due. Unless I'm wrong on this since I haven't done DLC but SSD you got enrolled after your NCOES and that email said NLT date to be done. They could say have it done sooner just to be safe I suppose.

Ultimately SM needs to go up the chain and find out what's going on. Because honestly this is just one side and it sounds a bit off.

SFC (Join to see) - I just find it odd that they only gave them a couple of months to get it done when they don't "need" to have it done until they get a lot closer to being eligible for E6.

A good habit to have is get everything done as early as possible so you don't get caught by surprises. The Army is master of surprises so its a great habit for success.
