I recently started working at a grocery store near Scott AFB. I have had people come in and ask for the military discount. The one was a dependent child and the other was a dependent spouse. Do some stores extend military discounts to dependents? When I told the spouse that we didn’t offer military discounts and that if we did it would be for service members and veterans only, she started to lecture me about the role our military plays and continued to lecture me about dependents even after I told her I was a veteran. What are your thoughts/feelings on dependents asking for (or should I say demanding) their spouse/parents benefits?

Ahhh.....the entitled dependapotamus. My favorite creature. Most of them qualify for "Karen" status. If I ever found out my wife or kids asked for a military discount I would lose my mind.
I certainly understand that dependents of military members make sacrifices, but so do a lot of other professions. It does not make them military by extension.
Extending a discount to military and veterans is a perk, not a right. No one should expect it. Especially not someone who is not a veteran or active duty SM.

I can promise you I am NO KAREN. My husband is 100% permanently and totally disabled from combat! I promise you his compensation and sad doesn't AT ALL cover what he used to make outside of his rating. We live with in our means and our dependent cards not only help with a discount but offer uus the use of the NEX during his constant doctor appts at the VA. I can promise you with the constant mental abuse we endure from Marine who never sleeps and is in constant pain WE HAVE EARNED EVERY PENNY OF A 10% DISCOUNT IF A STORE OFFERS IT!

Janet Sauer - If a store offers a discount to dependents you can and should take full advantage of it. If they do not, they certainly don't deserve to be berated for it.

The VA also offers counseling and assistance for caregivers of injured veterans. It may not be perfect but you obviously have issues to deal with.

It is really and absolutely impossible to judge all, and it depends on circumstances, as Ms Sauer mentioned her case, it is likely her husband is unable to simply go to the store and casually make the purchase. I do not agree with entitlements, but agree that the families at times have and are still making sacrifices on a day to day basis far beyond a 10% discount or so, which may be needed and deserved.

Thats pretty classless in my opinon. Companies are not required to provide discounts and it's already nice that these are extended to us as a "thank you" from many retailers. Some stores only give discounts to active military, but not to reserve/guard. Others include retired but some don't. I'm sure there are some that provide discounts to dependents but they don't have to. If they have it, great. If not, pay full price.

SSG Carlos Madden Dude the only time I ask about discounts is at outlets. I've never really been denied because I'm a reservist.

If someone's a dependent, don't they already get a "military discount" by shopping at the PX or Commissary?

You say that like PX and Commissary are discounts...

In Hawaii, and Germany sure... no place else. IN Arizona I took my chosen grocery store's (Fry's) receipt into the Commissary and got the exact same 2-week grocery list - 23% more expensive at Commissary. Same for Patrick AFB (18%), Fort Campbell (21%) and Fort Knox (19%). Commissary meat is cheap. But everything else local.

PX is basically the same price for everything as the economy, but no sales tax. But they seem to cater to Senior Enlisted / Officers. When was the last time you saw a $300 couch or $35 bookshelf at the PX? How about a $15 pair of Wrangler jeans? Supposedly the PX and Commissary are designed to help that Private just starting their family. I haven't met a single one who could afford to shop at either, primarily.
