I've seen several recent photos of Soldiers and Airmen with M4's with ambidextrous safety switches. Is this a growing trend nowadays? When I was in, I never saw an ambidextrous safety swith on an M4.

Would not be surprised at all, ambi safeties have been available in AR-15 variants for years.

As a southpaw shooter, this new generation of service members should feel blessed.

The Army has been updating M4s to M4a1 since 2014. The improvements include removal of the 3 round burst mechanism, so the rifle has full auto, a heavier barrel, and an ambidextrous safety.

SSgt (Join to see) I don't see a date on this article. Do you known when it was written? Also, is this what you're witnessing in the Air Force?

I believe 2018. The article has a list of projected projects starting with FY19.
I'm not aware of any M4 upgrades by the Air Force. The Air Force has an approved accessories list, that units can purchase with their own funds. It's pretty restrictive.
