So I signed a contract enlisting in the army back in October. I have not gone to BCT. I have yet to hear from my unit (no text, calls, emails) and their contact info in my contract is disconnected. I wanted to be an officer as I have a 4-year degree, but because I wanted to join AMEDD (but I haven't gotten my nursing degree yet), my recruiter really pushed me going enlisted and working as a 68C and then going to school and going green to gold. I got advice that this was not a good idea and when I asked him, he laid it out and it made sense. Since singing I have had at least 10 people tell me this was the wrong route. So I went to my recruiter to ask and he said he had my ack and what not. He also said that if I wanted to cancel my contract to sign one to go to OCS I would have to wait 6 months before I could do anything AND I need my mystery unit to release me. Is this true? I am supposed to go in and talk to him again, but I just don't know what to believe at this point.

I know rules are different for USAR but that sounds about right. You're not joining AMEDD so you're doing regular OCS and will be branched IAW needs of the Army. If you're a DEP drop there's usually a six month wait to reapply. Plus you're USAR so youre actually in the USAR since they don't have a DEP. Basically you'd be an entry level separation.

It sounds like he didn't really have a lot of good info on commissioning because green to gold is not often the best choice for someone with a degree already.

What is the best choice for you comes down to what will allow you to get your nursing license the fastest. Don't get focused on commissioning, it will come once you're a nurse. If going to 68C school for a year will interfere with your nursing program then it's not the best option. But you have a degree already and an LPN bridge program might be the fastest route to a BSN for you.

You may be stuck. Regardless, call an AMEDD recruiter (not a hometown recruiter you went to to enlist. Tell them your story and see what they tell you. If you have a BSN, then they may be able to do something for you. Otherwise you are stuck riding this out. If you do have to go the BCT route the AMEDD recruiter will be your commissioning path.

If you plan on branching in a competitive category branch (AR, iN, OD, etc) you do ROTC or OCS

If you are a RN, then you may direct commission.

Get your MOS, Go to school awarded professional medical degrees and then seek assistance from Transition NCO to get assigned as an Officer. I received something and as an E7/SFC I received a Direct Appointment as a First Lieutenant and retired as an O5/LTC with a retirement. Hooah!!
