This is going to be long so please bare with me.

What ever happened to leadership going out of their way to provide career enrichment. Now I know that this is not the case everywhere but it does happen and it has happened to me. In fact what I am about to say almost ruined my military career.

I have had the pleasure and honor to serve in both the Marine Corp and the Army in an active duty capacity. I came off active duty in January of 2012 from the Army and joined the National Guard. My first guard unit was essentially a communications unit, and I was made aware that I would be promoted and they did not have any slots for me if I were to get promoted being that their MTOW had no slots. So the current platoon sergeant did some research for me and found me a position in a unit that had a slot available. This was in an aviation unit, and I remembered how much fun I had while serving in the Marines in an aviation unit so I accepted it. This happened in May of 2012, in early June of 2012 I had a knee operation from a lingering problem I had from being on active duty for 12 years. So for Junes drill with this new unit I called in a week and a half prior and said I would not be there being that I just had knee surgery, and sent in my documentation concerning my surgery. I went to July, August, Septembers drill. After final formation of Sepetembers drill I approached my Sergeant and said I would be requesting a transfer closer to home being that my family and I were going through some problems. Octobers drill approached and I came to drill even though I had the flu, after formation Saturday morning my platoon sergeant approached me and said I looked like you know what and told me to go to sick call. I said I was fine and he then ordered me to go. So I went and was put on 48 hour quarters. I came back to the unit handed in my slip, which clearly said 48 hour quarters. So I wake up Sunday with a voice mail from my PLT SGT asking where I am. So I called him and said I am on quarters per my slip which was signed by a full bird colonel. He said oh thats right.

When I showed up for Novembers drill he had set up a time for me to talk to the Commander who was a Captain. This captain also happened to be a former marine. I sat down with her and she told me she would only authorize my transfer if I made up my days because I was marked AWOL. I said AWOL, those were excused drills and this is the first time I am hearing anything about making anything up. She said just make them up and I would be transferred. After drill was done I received an email from her saying if I did not make up my drills that she would get me kicked out and have my clearance pulled because she was a GS12 as a civilian and she knew people. So I was pretty upset about being threatened like that, and she gave me dates that I would come and make up drill. She wanted me there for a full 5 days, even though 3 days of drill were excused. After my 3rd day the NCO who was an E7 said I was good and there was no need to come back. I explained to him what the commander said and he said she was full of you know what, and for me not to come because I made up my time. So Decmebers drill came and went which was my last drill on my contract. I wanted to transfer because there was no way I was going to re-enlist with that unit and leadership. The day after my contract was over I went to the Regimental Armory to do paperwork to re-enlist. As I was sitting there two memo's came in signed by the commander reducing me in rank, and the other one was a bar to re-enlist. Really a memo? This was not sent on the proper form, just a memo with her signature. So I went to the S1 and a very nice E5 pulled my record of attendance, and it clearly showed that the drills I was excused for was changed to not excused. She called the unit and spoke to a friend of her's who did the change and was told she was ordered by the commander to change it. She was like WHAT! she can't do that.

So my paperwork got sent up for re-enlistment and I was contacted by a WO2 who asked me a bunch of questions. First was I ever counseled about re-enlisting, I said no. Were you ever counseled about the missed drills, I said no. He then told me this is not the first time this has happened with this commander, and he would call her. He called me back and told me that he jumped in her you know what and asked her why she was doing this, she told him because she did not like me. He said ma'am this is illegal for you to do and you have no grounds for any of this, especially with no counselings and that he has the email she sent me telling me the days I would make up. Again ma'am you can not dictate the days for a soldier to make up. So needless to say I got my rank back and transferred to a closer unit. The WO2 also spoke to the G1 colonel, and another colonel on a conference call about this commander, and apparently they were going to open a congressional on her.

My question is how can this be allowed and why does the leadership above this Captain not get involved. Apparently her S1 knew nothing about this and she was doing it all on her own. Being that I am no longer in I would love to email her, but I do respect her rank even though I do not respect her.

It's never "ok" for someone to deliberately ruin someone's career, but unfortunately it is still possible.  It's abuse of power and irresponsibility but it exists.

I just have a hard time understanding how this would go unseen, yet allowed by her chain of command. I really want to follow up and find out what happened. I am sure it was just a smack on the wrist

When serving as a civilian in the DoD, a toxic 3-star general simply wiped out billets to bypass all the rules that were put in place to protect civilian personnel from being "ruined" despite lack of diligence or cause.

Capricious psychopaths are quite adept at climbing ranks in any organization. Not all of them get caught like your female Marine Captain.

Hopefully the NG makes her resign.  The military is down sizing and dishonesty  and integrity is something leaders should possess.
