Can I deny promotion to SFC or submit a letter to the board asking not to be considered?

I will be getting my first look for SFC in next February's board (2022). The following month, I will hit 17 years AFS (prior service, date of rank resets, etc). Since there's no telling exactly when I would get pinned since I would have to attend SLC and wait for my number to come up, I would definitely be going past my 20 in order to meet the "high 3" requirement. I do not plan on staying 1 single day past 20 as I have other things lined up that I want to do. Can I deny promotion if selected? Or do I submit a letter to the board asking not to be looked at? Is there anything negative that can come of this?

No you can not decline to get looked at under the new promotion system. But based on what you are saying and your timeline it won’t matter. Even if you got selected next year with a low OML number, got an early SLC and got picked up really early you could still just get out at 20. And for your last year or 2 make E7 pay.

As long as your DLC is complete you will be reviewed and rated by the board for a spot on the OML.
I don't remember if you can sign a declination for promotion anymore but the answer is on the HRC Enlisted Promotion Page somewhere. I read it, I just don't remember exactly.
If you are promoted you can request to retire at 20 but HRC has been denying a lot of those retirements in the last few years if they don't have three years. It messes up their strength projections

And that is the exact scenario that I am trying to avoid, having my retirement denied. Then ending up at 21, 22, 23 in the middle of a set of overseas orders or another deployment, etc....thank you for the reply.
