I got orders from Germany to Fort Drum. I also have a dependent(12yo kid) in MD. I will have to ship my POV to Ft Drum a week before my DEROS. It will take about 2 months (maybe more). I am not taking any leave since I only have 2 days to report to my new duty station.
1.How am I suppose to move my dependent from MD to Fort Drum?
2. While I am waiting for my POV how am I suppose to get around the post, as well as house hunting, in processing and other things?
3. Since my POV will be shipped to Baltimore, MD port, will Army arrange a transportation to retrieve the POV? Im super confused.

1) Do you have other family members in the MD area that could assist in transporting your dependent to Drum?
2) Check with your sponsor. They may have information that could answer this.
3) I do not think the Army will arrange transportation to get you to retrieve your vehicle...however, I could be mistaken. For this, I would suggest you make contact with the transportation office that is shipping your vehicle to get better clarification.
4) I do not believe the Army will arrange a rental car for you. You may have to just get it and then submit for reimbursement....and hope you are reimbursed. Again, check with your Sponsor, your Transportation Office, and whomever your DTS Reviewer/Approver is.

Unfortunately no. I had to deal with the same thing when I PCS'ed from Korea back to the states (and when I PCS'ed from Germany back to the states)... The rental is on us, I'm afraid.

The Shipper may be on the hook for rental costs if they are over XYZ days past the expected date of arrival (that won't ever happen though, they always pad that day by months to ensure they're never liable for delays). You'd have to look at the paperwork the shipper gave you when you left Germany to see the dates they used.

Welcome to the world of PCSing.

how long have you had your orders? You are eligible to ship your POV up to 60 days prior to your DEROS. When I PCSed from Hawaii, I shipped my car the day after physically receiving my orders, which was 23 days prior to my report date.

Sounds like there was some misplanning on your part to only have 2 days to report. Unfortunately, you will have to arrange transportation of your dependent to Fort Drum. Thats the downside of going unaccompanied OCONUS.

Your sponsor should be your way around. The Army will not cover the cost of a rental car for you while you wait for your POV. If its not on your orders, you are not authorized it. And no, it cant be added to your orders.

And to retrieve your POV, you are once again responsible for arranging your transportation to and from getting it. Why are you shipping to Baltimore when there is a VPC in New Jersey?

I just got Assignment instructions yesterday. Report date is in first week of March. I don't even have a sponsor yet. Everyone who I have talked so far says that Army won't pay for anything. I wonder sometimes how do single parents handle this kind of issues. I mean, do I really have to pay out of my pocket for the expenses that Army created for me?

SSG (Join to see) - Ok, so you got your instructions yesterday which means you need to attend a levy brief. Once you do that, you can be cut orders and prepare to ship all of your stuff. Ship your car to the New Jersey VPC. Thats enough time to take some leave and go get your child from MD.
Did the army create the expenses for you, or did you join the Army knowing they did not issue you a family? The Army will pay for what the Army has to I.E. your HHG, your POV, your transportation from Germany to Fort Drum, but anything else is your responsibility.

SSG, I didn't mean to vent to you I was asking for an advice if everyone goes thru the same thing? I've seen many soldiers who PCS here to Germany are entitled to a rental car. Some had it as long as 30 days. Didn't know it was only OCONUS thing. But I appreciate your response.

SSG (Join to see) - They should not have been entitled to a rental. When i went to Hawaii, I wasnt entitled to a rental and had to pay out of pocket for one until my car got there.
