In the article below we read that DHS is video taping the travelling public in order to enable their Behavioral Detection Officers (BDO) to predict future actions. This may be a pilot program, but as you read further in the article the author mentions or alludes to other efforts to develop and perfect facial recognition software for the purposes of predicting future behavior.
Why? How will they act on that supposition? If you're in an airport, train station or whever else the TSA sets up (I've seen them on the Houston Metro buses), you will be under surveillance. If a BDO id's you as a potential threat you could be detained and interrogated for nothing more than the way you look. Think of that! You've done nothing to raise suspicion other than hit a few of their behavioral indicators. Maybe you had an argument with your spouse or co-worker. Maybe you didn't report all of your tips to the manager when you got off work. Maybe you're sporting your favorite bible verse on a t-shirt. Who knows? But then you find yourself being detained and questioned about your motives today on no more suspicion than your appearance. I know that's being redundant, but I want that to sink in.
Thought crime. Predicting future actions. Giving a government agency like the DHS, TSA, or other agency the authority to detain and question you indefinitely, because how do you prove a negative? They say you were going to commit a crime, you assert you weren't. How do you prove that? At that point they could detain you indefinitely while they obtain warrants to search vehicle and domicile to build their case against you.
RP share your thoughts. Is this really "security?" Does this kind of thing make you feel safer? Here's a thought - Would profiling be more or less effective?

I posted most of this on another thread earlier regarding free speech and 1984, a nice tie in here so I will repost with some edits relative to surveillance.
This was all predictable and people have been warning about it for decades. Some on the left want the government to control and monitor everyone, try too discern from their actions possible future actions or just keep an eye on them etc.
Reread 1984 by Orwell this is the path we are heading down. Certainly not there yet but many of the concepts Orwell wrote about are developing:
Omnipresent government surveillance: We have cameras everywhere and want to put them on cops too. This DHS story ties in with the massive surveillance we have been under for decades it has gotten worse since 9-11.
Perpetual War: because we are unable to effectively end one due to political ineptness. We have to keep fighting because politicians cannot manage peace.
Doublethink: The idea where people can accept contradictory beliefs without issue.
Thought crime: occurrence or instance of controversial or socially unacceptable thoughts
Cult of personality: when an individual uses mass media, propaganda, or other methods, to create an idealized, heroic, and at times, worshipful image. We saw this with Obama's rise to power. He is just he largest example, not the only one.
Inner Party: These are the elites that want to watch us. They enjoy a quality of life that is much better than that of the Outer Party members and the proles. The inner party is the top 2% of the population.
These are a few examples of what he wrote about in 1949. He certainly saw around the corner when he wrote that one. There is much more too.
All of this (and much more) rolled up under Ingsoc (English Socialism) as the government. We are heading toward Amerisoc.
