I have a soldier, fresh out of AIT a few months ago hand me his ERB and he has 3 awards. Army Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism-Service Medal. That's not right, is it? He told me all of his AIT friends had the medal and wore it for graduation. That's weird to me because I only received that medal for deploying to Afghanistan...

It seems like we aren't supposed to get it until after AIT - but we got told to wear it at graduation from AIT. I just found a picture from graduation day in 2005 - me and two of my friends in that picture have the NDSM, GWOT-SM and ASR. Now based on the criteria - I don't think we should have been allowed to wear it. It sounds like they have just basically been handing it out since 2003 honestly. I haven't seen an end date yet for GWOT either. I did deploy twice within my first four years though (Iraq).
This is on HRC website: "Q11: I have researched the GWOT-SM on the Department of Defense Manual 1348.33, Volume 2 and AR 600-8-22 and I still have some questions regarding whether the Soldier can wear the GWOT-SM or not. When is the cut off for Soldiers to receive the GWOT-SM? After completing training, once on station for the 30 to 60 consecutive days can they receive the GWOT-SM?
A11: IAW AR 600-8-22, dated 5 March 2019, 2–21. Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. (c) "Servicemembers must be assigned, attached, or mobilized to a unit supporting designated operations listed in para-graph 2–20d for 30 consecutive days or for 60 nonconsecutive days. Not reservists or NG. So yea, anyone in the AD will basically get it, and it seems to be the SOP to hand them out at AIT.

So while the award was open, generally all Active Duty soldiers would start accumulating time toward the award once out of TRADOC. Reservists would need to be on orders outside of BA's and AT.

CPT (Join to see) - It's still open. I haven't seen anything that it's been ended. Not for GWOT-SM. For the Expeditionary yes. That ended. I don't think the end of the GWOT has been officially declared since we still have people doing missions in the Middle East.

SFC (Join to see) - When did the GWOTEM end? I received one for 2020-2021, and my understanding is units are still awarding them for ongoing operations in the Middle East.

SPC (Join to see) - I believe you are correct. To my knowledge only the Afghanistan Campaign and Iraq Campaign have ended. GWOT-E is still open along with Operation Inherent Resolve. GWOT-E covers much of the middle east and I think some other areas minus the areas covered by OIR.

Can’t speak to whether they earned the medals coming out of training after the GWOT ended in Afghanistan in Aug. However, the GWOT-service medal is not earned for deploying to Afghanistan in support of the Global War on Terror. That would be the GWOT-Expeditionary Medal. Folks supporting the GWOT state side are all still eligible for the GWOT-S.
Allow me to also add... The GWOT was not based only in Afghanistan and being retired, I can't speak to whether the DoD considers it ongoing in places like Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Somalia, etc...
