The VA recently launched a new online GI Bill comparison tool to make it easier for Veterans to calculate their Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits and to learn more about colleges and universities across the country. This new tool provides information about a school such as whether the school is a Yellow Ribbon school, whether they participate with the Principles of Excellence, the school graduation rate and loan default percentages.

The problem with this tool is it doesn't show you whether Post 9/11 or Montgomery GI Bill is better. Though with simple calculations you can make the determination. Montgomery pays $1646 per month, out of which you pay the tuition, actually, you pay the tuition up front, and Montgomery reimburses you out of the $1646. Whatever is left over is what you have for housing and books. If you have the College fund or paid the kicker, then you add $250 per month to that, roughly $1900 per month. Montgomery is usually only better if you're going to certain online only schools, or have a full scholarship/Pell Grants to pay the tuition. Otherwise Post 9/11 is better.

It is critical to remember that if you go Post 9/11 you can't go back to Montgomery. Vitally important to do the research before you make the decision.
