With President Obama proclaiming, "Let the games begin," in a taped message to 270 athletes and their family members, the 2015 Warrior Games kicked off Friday, launching more than a week of fierce, Paralympic-style competition on the verdant grounds of Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia.

The opening ceremonies, held at the National Museum of the Marine Corps, brought together six teams — from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Special Operations Command and the British Armed Forces, for a torch-lighting ceremony and accolades from Defense Secretary Ash Carter, Joint Chiefs Vice Chairman Adm. James Winnefeld and others.

Outstanding, we cannot forget our wounded and injured Soldiers/Sailors/Airmen/Marines. Getting them together for some camaraderie and competition is great for the soul.

2015 DOD Warrior Games final results:

Heat, humidity and wicked thunderstorms forced organizers of the 2015 Warrior Games to juggle schedules and work overtime to ensure the safety of all athletes, but little could dampen the spirit of sports as 270 athletes competed for 527 medals in Quantico, Virginia, June 19-28.

The Army team smoked the competition, earning the grand prize of the games, the Chairman's Cup, by bringing home 162 medals, including 69 golds. Taking second place for the second year in a row, the Marine Corps team earned 105 medals, including 47 golds.
