Unless you were assigned as a individual you would wear the unit you deployed with, company level or higher. Everyone in the AO is there supporting OIR.

Sooo...who did you deploy with and where did you deploy to? The reason I am asking about where your deployed to is because where you literally had your boots on the ground may not qualify for IDP/HZD which would make that area a non combat zone...meaning that zone isn't authorized a patch. For example, there are units in Kuwait that support OIR....but because they are in Kuwait they don't get a patch. Also, if you were in an area that warrants a SSI, then you would simply wear your unit patch if you deployed to that area as a company.

SGT(P) (Join to see) I would go with the safe bet and wear the patch that ADCON and primary OPCON for your element. Just because you reported to a COL that worked for OIR...that doesn't rightly mean you're not authorized any other patch. Go with your unit patch.

SFC,
Wouldn't I need a memo reflecting that I am authorized wear my unit patch on my right sleeve?

SGT(P) (Join to see) usually that memo is for a patch that is not your unit patch.

SGT(P) (Join to see) Memos do not justify wearing a combat patch. There is no orders or proof required. I only have a memo for one of my combat patches. On my two other tours I just default to wearing my unit patch. Even when I was sent to different units in theater I will wear the patch I wore on my left shoulder.

When echelons below company level (such as teams or squads) deploy, members of these units will wear the SSI of the lowest echelon deployed Army unit (company or higher) in the deployed chain of command (based on written orders) as the SSI – MOHC. When there is no intermediate unit (company or higher) in the deployed chain of command, these deployed Soldiers will wear the SSI of the senior command in the theater as its SSI – MOHC. (e) Individual Soldiers who are attached (to include OPCON, cross-leveled, assigned, or augmenting deployed units) will wear the same SSI – MOHC worn by members of the deployed Army unit (company or higher) to which attached by written orders. A Soldier who is further attached (to one or more units) during one deployment will only wear the SSI- MOHC for the first Army unit (company or higher) to which attached by written orders. Soldiers who deploy with their unit (company level or higher) will wear the SSI – MOHC as outlined in paragraph 21–18b(3)(a), regardless of how many times they are further attached to other units as individua
