Officers will be awarded this ribbon upon successful completion of their basic/orientation or higher level course. For those officer personnel assigned a specialty, special skill identifier, or MOS based on civilian or other service acquired skills, this ribbon will be awarded upon honorable completion of 4 months active service. That is...unless....they were prior enlisted before going thru ROTC.

Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) officers are eligible to wear the Army Service Ribbon (ASR) upon commissioning as second lieutenants. The Army Service Ribbon is awarded to recognize the completion of initial entry training, which includes Basic Officer Leader Course (BOLC) for officers.

Upon successful completion of their commissioning requirements and training, ROTC officers are authorized to wear the Army Service Ribbon on their uniforms. This ribbon signifies their successful entry into the Army as officers and their completion of the initial training phase.

Therefore, ROTC officers typically wear the Army Service Ribbon for commissioning, and this continues as they progress to BOLC and further in their military careers.
