Going from active 6yrs to reserve…..would I have to deploy if Unit is activated or do I have choice to say no for up to 36 months?

Been active duty for 6 years. Currently in Alaska. I ets in may. I was thinking about joining reserves. I was told by retention/ guy that since I’m coming from active duty, if I join reserve I wouldn’t have to deploy for 36 months if I choose not to. Even if my unit is activated I would have choice. Is that correct or am I being swindled lol

Every NG and USAR offers stabilization if you're coming from the AC, but not if you join after you ETS. NG is different from USAR and every NG has its own policy set by its governor. Activations for state emergencies don't count as deployments, so they don't count as stabilizations, but also it's only during a state of emergency when that does happen. USAR aren't called out during state emergencies so that's not an issue.

* EDIT * ... the 36 months is correct. The USAR just updated the policy last year.
The USAR policy is for 36 months if coming from the AC, not 36 months. Some States offer ARNG deployment stabilization while others do not and the length of deployment stabilization varies from state to state (note: the two years IS pretty standard though).
Another thing to consider is than, at least in the ARNG (not sure about the USAR), you need to sign your contract prior to ETSing .. otherwise you're not coming from active duty - you'll be coming from the IRR.

Note the edit I did above .. the 36 months IS correct (you seemed to have been typing when I did the edit).
I couldn't find anything off-hand regarding the specifics of the PAARNG for stabilization. The Army National Guard main site does say that, "Enlisted Army Soldiers and officers may qualify for Military Service Obligation reductions and up to two years of stabilization (certain states may offer more)".
Best bet on the ARNG side is to contact a state recruiter* and get the answer from him. As with everything, ask to see it in writing :)
