Quick clarification (probably for my own - might not have any impact) ... Did the VA take 18 months to notify you of a decision they made, or are you saying that the approval (possibly an appeal in there somewhere) took 18 months? If you look at the date on the decision letter, that will tell you.

Your best option is to contact a VSO (DAV, VFW, etc.) to help with submitting a retroactive claim. The typical retroactive claim to the VA is processed automatically when a disability rating is granted - the pay compensation back to the effective date the rating was granted.

Your case sounds more intricate. Part of it is a catch-22 - you must be enrolled in VA health care and get approval before entering into long-term care and the care must have been deemed required by a VA medical evaluation. However, if the effective date of your rating was before your entered into long-term care, then it's possible that they would retroactively compensate you back to that point.

Again ... talk to a VSO to help you work your way through the complexities.

CW2 Douglas Weld - You were given a rating 18 months ago and weren't paid anytime during that 18? Did you log into ebenefits to check your percentage, the date it was awarded and also checked payment history to ensure a payment wasn't going through?

SSgt Christophe Murphy yes I logged in weekly and my percentage if 100% was indicated only after 18 months. I was awarded a sum of money but not that which I used as private pay

CW2 Douglas Weld - The date of determination on your disability rating is the key item. If you don't have your determination letter, go to https://www.va.gov/disability/view-disability-rating/rating and it will show the date for each service connected issue and the date of determination for each.

The SHOULD match up with the compensation and pension payments deposited to your account. If they don't, then you need to contact the VA and let them know.

If the date of determination is before you started with long-term care facilities, you MIGHT be able to get some help with the payments. If it's after, then it's less likely (not completely outside the realm of possibility ... but not likely either).

Either way - contact a VSO to help walk you through what the art of the possible is.

I hope you keep all receipts for the items and services you paid for while awaiting their decision. Get a veteran service officer to assist and direct you.

They are a funny bunch, they granted one of my claims yet attached "no value" to it refusing to increase my disability.
