Have you ever met a spouse and realized they they didn't know you are a female?

This question could be for men to. As it happens we always refer to each other as Rank and last name without any intention of deception, it's just the way it is. I've experienced this in the past and know by the reaction of the spouse that they were unaware their husband was conversing/working with a female soldier. The reaction was so evident that I knew there was going to be trouble, even though all communications were professional. Conversely if you're a female soldier have you experienced problems because of working in a male dominated environment with your nonmilitary or military spouse?

I remember meeting a group of spouses at an event outside of work, all in civilian clothes. We were having normal conversation, getting along well, and one woman turned to me and said "so your husband is a pilot with our husbands?" I told her no, that I worked with her husband, and I actually didn't have a spouse. For the rest of the night, the tone changed, and the women acted weird toward me, unwilling to allow me into their group. Despite the fact that they had been so nice just moments before, it seemed they had all turned against me once they found out why I had been invited to the party.

I think most wives expect us military females to look like one of the guys, they sure don't like it when you're an attractive female working with their husband.

Not only the gender issue but when your spouse has a lot of more rank than you do an interesting conversation will ensue. Almost like seeing a unicorn.

When I deployed with an integrated unit, when I talked to my wife I told her whether I was talking about male or female soldiers, just for that reason. She knew that my circle of friends included females, and was fine with that, but I'm sure she wouldn't have liked being surprised by it, even if it hadn't been intentionally hid from her.

CPT (Join to see) this goes two ways: 1. who cares who your spouse talks to at work as you trust them 2. you do not trust them so there is already an issue and maybe they are hiding the fact that you are the opposite gender. Some people overreact and some people have a reason to be concerned. Luckily for me so far I only really have male co-workers so no issues there, though I am always looking to lower my insurance rates.

LTC (Join to see) - I like your sense of humor. I was on the receiving end of the issue. I had no idea she didn't know until I saw her reaction. Maybe they had issues going on I didn't know and I didn't ask, let them sort it out. Duck, roll and take cover...LOL

I know I was called the "office wife" of my co-worker by his wife. I would call and she would ask him if it was his "office wife". I found that funny, but that was a good marriage, though the fact I was a guy may have helped a bit too.
