I'm interested in participating in a sniper challenge whether with the Tactical Games or the Mammoth Sniper Challenge or some such. I have no substantial experience in long-range shooting and little in related skillsets. What courses on the civilian market would you recommend to get me up to speed?

For every round you shoot in competition I recommend 10 rounds fired in practice. Know where you will be shooting. Know the weather you can expect. Practice, practice, practice in all conditions that you may face in competition. With long range competition you will need to read the weather conditions (WIND) between you and the target. How your weapon and know your ammo.

Now since you say you have no experience I would check for a local Bench Rest club at your closet gun range. Here is the website for the national bench rest shooters association.

If you get serious you will be loading your own ammo as commercial ammo will not cut it in a competition. You will also Chronograph your loads as you need to tune your ammo for your rifle . Ballistic Coefficient is a term you will become quite familiar with as you embark on this path.

I use a Kimber 8400 in .300 Win Mag for shots out to 1100 yards.
