I plan on volunteering and submitting my packet as soon as I hit my 1-year from DEROS date! (Jan 2015) I'm torn between going the Career Counselor or Recruiter route and I've had great feedbacks on both. If I could submit my packet now I definitely would, can I? I love taking care of not just soldiers but "people." My question is: What are the chances that I'll be able to choose a location and actually get it? I would really like to get a location in Florida or somewhere close by.

SGT Bransford,

Love the enthusiasm! Definitely suggest you read DA PAM 611-21 and familiarize yourself with the requirements to be either a 79R Recruiter or 79S Career Counselor. The next thing to consider is, do you want to help young people enlist or Soldiers to reenlist/extend? I personally had never thought of the 79S route and love the opportunities to step "outside the box" being a Recruiter affords me. Then, I'd look at comparisons of both MOSs' overall personnel size (over/under strengthed?) and promotion trends. That way you aren't only thinking about the upfront MOS decision but long term career impact or potentials as well.

You do have to wait to hit that 6-12 month from DEROS time frame for OCONUS. Volunteers select a total of 9 battalions within 3 brigades (3 per brigade) in order of preference. If your #1 BN choice is at 99% strength or less, you will be assigned to that BN. If the BN is at 100% strength or more, USAREC G-1 looks at your #2 BN choice. This process will continue until you are assigned to the first BN on your list at 99% strength or less. Nothing says you can't call the BNs and see what strength % they are at. Just saying...

Been there done that, volunteered got picked-up, went to assignment, only a year in got pulled to be part of the then new combat NCO AIT instructor program, would have rather stayed on the trail.

Recruiting is a great assignment if you make it into one. You are in charge of your destiny that is why I stayed for 11 years.

My hat's off to you! Don't think I would have enjoyed an instructor assignment myself.
