PCS'ing this summer and I have always had the Army move me. However I am contemplating the idea of a DITY move and hiring the company myself. I have heard this can prove financially beneficial. Normally I would risk the hassle, but I know I am already over weight limit and if Army moves me I could end up coming out of pocket quite a bit.

Anyone have any advice, tips, experiences as to what I should be looking at/for. PCS is going to be from VA to MA.

Thanks in advance and please provide me with some useful info.

I'm trying to steer clear of the packing and trucking myself option. Has anyone hired their own moving company and has this worked in their favor? I don't care so much about the pocketing of extra money as I do about not having to come out of pocket on the overages from weight allowance. I cap at 13,000 and we moved here with 12,500. That was3 years ago and venture to believe a couple thousand pounds ago also.

I've moved myself and it isn't worth it in my opinion... sit back, relax and let the pros handle it.  Wash, rinse, repeat

I have never done a full DITY, but I have done partial ones and I know a lot of people who did their own.  Look at different companies and see what they charge.  I have heard (through RUMINT) that some places will price match other companies.  Another option I have heard of is to get PODS and have them give you a quote.  They drop off the container in your driveway and you load it up.  When you finish, they come and pick it up to deliver wherever you are going.

Another option is you could do a partial DITY and rent a large moving truck, load up as much as you can, and have a company carry the rest.  In the large u-hauls, they say you can fit up to a 3-4 bedroom house worth of stuff.  I know someone who did this and they made close to $10K, and they fit everything they had in there.  It is more work for you, but you end up making a good amount.

One thing you should consider before hand is that you will have the money you make added to your taxable income, so just be sure to factor that in ahead of time so you don't get disappointed come tax time.

I have done the partial DITY myself before too. I was actually offered two cost moves at my last transition because of a multitude of things going on. Military did my full cost move from Europe and than delivered it here from storage, than had another allowed moved when going back on AGR from Reserves, and to that I moved our stuff and made out like a champ. Good tip on the tax info however at this point my wife's income means we get dinged pretty hard anyways . Thanks for the advice.
