I ran across this article in which Syria's Assad has stated he feels "Political Islam has failed" and it is time to take another approach. What does everyone else think?

The "project of political Islam has failed," Syria's President Bashar al-Assad said on Monday, calling for the separation of religion from politics, state television said.

I think if they continue to allow extremists of either branch of Islam to run things, you will not be able to have a stable government due to the differences and hatreds for one another. Plus if you continually fund organizations of hatred, they will eventually turn around and bite you in the ass!

I find this interesting. However, I do not see how you can make the distinction. In Islam, there is no separation of politics and religion. What is more interesting is that Assad is an Alawite, an offshoot of Shia. Shi'ites tend to put more focus on this blending (Look at Iran). From the very beginning Islam was never just a religion- it was a political movement. This can be seen through the unification under Muhammad, through the Caliphs, and through their empire.

You make this distinction as if Christianity didn't also become a political movement with the conversion of Constantine in 312AD. Separation of Church and State was a radical concept that didn't really take root for almost another 1400 years. Despite that root being almost 250 years old it is still under constant attack by the religious right.

Yes but I do not believe the rhetoric as often it is way different than the actions of those extremists.
