President Obama presented the Presidential Unit Citation to the US Public Health Service (PHS) today in the Oval Office. The PHS was recognized for their work on the frontlines of the Ebola epidemic in West Africa. This is the first Presidential Unit Citation the PHS has received

To me it is somewhat amazing that the entire US Public Health Service (PHS) was presented with a Presidential Unit Citation. That seems to be akin to the entire US Coast Guard or one of the Military Services being presented with a Presidential Unit Citation.

It surprised me as well. I thought it would be extended to those deployed in-country however I think it was the extension of services that led to the PHS as a whole. None the less, it was surprising in both recognition as well as entire service.

All too often those in the trenches in all walks of life are unsung heros and how refreshing it is to get a nod once in a while, in this case from POTUS.

Yea- the CAPT got hers. I guess it’s like a unit receiving it. Otherwise they would have to figure out what individuals participated. That is not the norm in DOD. You have to take into account they are built different then DOD.
