Just picked up "P" status recently. I obviously know how to do the job, otherwise I wouldn't have been recommended but I'm looking for advice on the what to focus on with the added responsibility. Any advice would be appreciated!

Does anyone have any horror stories from their early days taking over a Squad? I've seen it difficult for some who have been promoted up from within the same Platoon or Company to perform when some of their old peers are still Joe's.

I went through it when I was a squad leader (2 months). I was a newly promoted E-5 that got back from Iraq with SGT stripes and my PSG put me in the Squad Leader position until the incoming SL arrived. Man o Man, the company moved two soldiers that were getting chapter out to my squad and it was not easy. They didn't gave a F and 90% of my time was dedicated on baby sitting those soldiers.
Good O'l days, I kind of miss it, because It was something the challenged me on a daily basis. Managing troops when most of your time you are not with them is hard. You have to have some good Team Leaders so you can still accomplish your tasks. I was lucky, I had two solid SPC that were square away that took charge in my absence and got the mission done.

I feel like you definitely hit the nail on the head SSG Cedeno. Trust is one of the biggest issues I have with just letting go. I have a completely new Squad that has never worked together before. So we're feeling it out right now, finding out what each person brings to the table. It feels like I'm getting pulled in ten different directions though sometimes, you know? The other Squad Leaders in the Platoon tell me that's normal until you get into a routine though, so fingers crossed.
Thanks!!!

I wish you the best. Just remember you set the pace for your TLs they don't dictate yours and always share your knowledge.
