To preface, I am prior service attempting to join the National Guard. I won't have to complete basic, but rather, I will report directly to AIT.

My question is when would I ship out? I have read you must attend training 90 days from signing your contract, but wasn't certain if that was correct.

It will really depend on when you get a seat in the AIT class and orders . Your recruiter will let you know when you are to ship. Shouldn't be more than a month.

Thank you for the response SSG. I only ask because I have a baby due in June, so I was actually hoping to push it back a few months. If it ends up not being possible, I would just work around it.

CPL, I am in the VA National Guard. It is a different world. Though we train with and like our Active Duty counterparts, we are not able to just go to AIT or Basic unless the funds are allocated for your training. Sometimes it is right away, most of the time it's a wait. It took me over a year to get to AIT after re-enlisting. I am Prior Service Air Force. So, I did go back to a Basic Training at Ft. Sill, several months after drilling. I went to Warrior Transition Course - no longer an option. My AIT was at Ft. Gordon. Once you get to AIT, you will be front loaded to class because of the funding. Active duty time is limited due to costs. You may not have the ability to control your dates for class and it may overlap your Wife's due date. Just work with your Readiness NCO and Training NCO.

You will “ship out” to the reception battalion and once your paperwork is done you will ship out again to AIT.

After swearing in at MEPS, how long do you have before shipping to AIT?

I went to MEPSs twice. Once for all of the initial tests and screenings. The second time the morning I was leaving for Basic and that was when I was sworn in.

That will depend on your MOS and school and its seats that it has. It could be as little as two weeks or as much as 3 months or more. As you mention having a baby that is due in June, be sure to bring that up to your recruiter so it can be factored in. Nothing worse that being rolled back to the next class, even if it is for a new addition to the family. Congratulations.

As a guard member, you report to your unit and they’ll schedule your MOS school; probably a Reserve Component Course.

Make sure they have you squared away as far as uniforms go before you ship. Depending on the school it may not be easy to get them.

Nobody except a career counselor at MEPS can tell you that being your prior service brother.

When I transitioned from Active Duty to National Guard I didn't go to MOSQ for almost a year. Now things have changed a bit since them. Are you in RSP or did you go straight to a unit? My state requires all new soldiers to go to RSP but the state your in may be different. If you went to a unit you will have to get with the 1SG and readiness NCO to get a school date set. If you go to RSP, they should already have a projected date for you to go. Just get with your NCOIC and they can shed some light on it.
