Army air medal what is the importance or significance of the medal I was in the infantry and was wondering because those in my local area can receive a permanent auto tag (no tag fees) if earned

The Air Medal itself used to be a heroism award. It is now used, in the Army, for meritorious achievement while serving in flight status during combat operations. Perhaps your DMV has not delineated the service specific Air Medals and chose to include them under the blanket of all heroism awards. I know some states even issue Bronze Star plates.

Example, you were Infantry. If you were a door gunner on a Blackhawk you could have received an Air Medal.

I have one on my Harley and my pickup. I earned mine in Desert Storm when I was a Flight Medic. I thought I was just doing my job evacuating the wounded but someone else saw it as much more. So one formationn before we left for home, they called my name and pinned one on.
