Just a quote about engagement and how so much of our country has so little understanding of what the military is about and what goes on in the world...even those who "support" us refuse to play a part and help....

In case you did not see my discussion last week "The military demographic, stereotype, and who serves...so much of America is so out of touch...living in a bubble..." or if was too lengthy...

Just want to see what your opinion is on this movie clip from "Lions for Lambs"...do you think this would ever work? If not, do you have any ideas for something similar? How can so much of the American Public come back to Earth and be as involved and knowledgeable as they were during WWII, when nobody was too good or too privileged to serve? Will the only thing many Americans ever focus on, especially those who come from suburbia, is "a big house with tall walls" as the American Dream?

Watch these clips from "Lions for Lambs".

This is a clip also from the movie that supports the speech...

I think that is a good idea. But no criminals. It works great for Isreal. Would stimulate patriotism in my opinion. Two years then further education

LT Coates,
There are some significant differences about society and the military as it existed during WWII and today. There are some of us, mostly veterans, who do pay attention and understand that we are at war. We talk to people. We support wounded warrior, VFW, USO, etc. You will bump into us at the airport sometimes. We often give up first class seats to soldiers in uniform, and not as some kind of publicity stunt to our benefit. You won't hear about it in the press. I think that is a big part of the problem. The press stopped reporting on the war and really started just covering it up. Even people who are very interested in what is going in in Afghanistan, Iraq, or any of the other conflicts we are involved in (Libya, Egypt, Korea, Nigeria, Poland, Iraq, etc etc etc) find it nearly impossible to find ANY information. The press stopped covering news and pretty much spewes pro-administration propaganda 24X7. Its no wonder Americans have no clue what is going on in the world! No one tells them, and if they look it up and research it for themselves, the second they say anything they are labeled a tin foil hat wearing conspiracy theorist or a dangerous right wing extremist (see the tea party movement) . The world back home is a constant stream of distraction and misinformation. All media sources focus on what Justin Beaber did last week, or what rehab Lindsey Lohan is going into this week. No one in power wants the people to know what is going on in the world, and they own the press, the movie companies, the advertisers, the television corporations, the news papers, the publishers and large portions of the internet. We are living in dangerous times. Everything we hear is twisted and skewed to support the political elites progressive agenda. The vast majority of people are more interested in making sure they have the latest gadget (iPhone, iPad, iPod, Android, etc.) and who is doing well on Big Brother, Dancing with the stars, Survivor, and the Amazing Race, then what is really happening around the world, or even in their own country. Americans are mostly apathetic and don't take the time to find out what the people who are supposed to be representing them are really doing. Those of us who do take the time to look up a politicians voting record or past business practices, or even their qualifications are vastly outnumbered by people who listen to the lies and get all worked up over a religious business owner not wanting to pay for abortions... Americans are completely disengaged. They don't know and they don't want to know. It is really discouraging, but what can a person do? I speak up when and where I can and I am starting to see signs that some Americans are waking up, but it will take some time to pull the wool off and get people to do anything... Keep the faith and fight the good fight. Keep to your oath! We are still in the fight!

Do you think something like the plan presented by the students could ever work in America?

I think it would be very good for all the students to serve their country. I'm an advocate for a plan that would require every high school graduate to serve two years in the military after graduation, like several other countries do, but it will never happen in the US. There are too many privileged people and people who are so anti USA in the USA that "forcing" young people to serve would never fly. If the government re-instituted the draft, there would be riots in the street! Primarily because it would effect people directly against their will. I'm proud of our all volunteer military, but I am not proud of the way the lambs in office use that military. Like they said in the movie, those politicians will read about a bunch of guys getting killed and say, "we got our nose bloodied, but we have learned from that mistake..." The politicians really don't look at the fact that their bloody nose, is the whole life and all the potential of a generation of our best and brightest. It sickens me! War should always be a last resort, but if war is the action, it should be executed with ferocity and resolve! We take the big guns in, beat the tar out of our enemies and don't stop until they capitulate. Then we enforce harsh terms! If you want peace prepare for war, and if war comes, WIN!

Join nearly 2 million former and current members of the US military, just like you.
