A new Gallup poll suggests pride in America is waning. Currently ranked #33? While some of the research terms are subjective, and who cares what USA Today says, what do you think?

Are our best years behind us or ahead of us? Are we shaping a better tomorrow or is the American Dream dying?

I find it hard to understand why so many Americans think that America is the worst thing to happen to the world and all other countries are better, including ones where civil rights are suppressed with ruthlessness.

No country is perfect but I've seen enough of the world, both through the military and on my own, to think that despite our shortcomings (and yes, there are many) we still on average provide more opportunity for those who are driven to work hard than anywhere else out there.

Wow Sgt Ray B, I am not sure where this attack is coming from. My remarks said nothing about special education students, yet I am being assailed as if I am supporting discrimination against them. Where in that post did I even mention anything that had to do specifically with special education students? I simply said that while America is not perfect, I don't understand why many of our own citizens act like we are the worst country in the world. I also said that ON AVERAGE we provide more opportunity. That does allow for the fact that not everyone gets the same opportunities, and does not preclude trying to improve that situation.

Or is it your contention that America is the worst country in the world based solely on the basis of education provided to special needs students? If so that tailors your view of what makes a country good or bad to a very narrow special interest, but please by all means show us how all other countries out there do a better job than America with respect to special education students. I actually agree that these students should be provided a free education through high school, the same as any other American child, and NOWHERE have I said otherwise. I truly don't understand why I was singled out for your diatribe.

Oh give me a break. While I sympathize with special needs children not being catered to in terms of education, that is hardly the ruthless suppression of civil rights on a level with countries where speaking out against your government or the state religion results in torture or death. Where girls are shot for trying to go to school or women stoned for sex outside of marriage (including when they are raped). While I appreciate your passion for disabled children, I would say your ranking of their plight is WAY out of touch with reality. Special needs children trying to get a better education are not being jailed or murdered, nor are their parents. I'm sorry but in my eyes you have lost a lot of credibility.

I think we'll just have to agree to disagree on our views/experiences of what real oppression is.

We experience our fair share of the doldrums every now and then. But America is still the quintessential nation.

The problem with as from what I see I now live in Glen Ellyn IL witch is a somewhat affluent comminty. Tesla Masereti Audio at an intersection kind of town. Because of the good living the dream is alive and I can tell because the star and stripes are more displayed than not. However in other lower income areas around Chicago you would be hard pressed to see a flag. Part of this is the 40 bucks not there to purchase a flag but the other part I feel in lower income areas the "dream" is getting further and further out of reach. The economic gap and patriotism would more than likely show a strong inverse correlation in income vs being patriotic. Lower income lower level of patriotism vs higher income higher level of patriotism. The gad is due to the erosion of the middle class. If life is good for you America is working but if every day is a struggle then the American dream is fading. However there are many trying and willing to enter the US as our worst is better than their worst or in some cases their best.

As long as there are people that believe in what this country stands for and are willing to put their lives and honor in the defense of those beliefs! The dream will never die!

The dream was just that, a dream. That dream has faded into a nightmare, and we are tormented by the poor decisions of those before us. The dream died long ago.

SSgt (Join to see) as long as I can request a kush next assignment during my reenlistment I'll stay in, I need some stress free time in the military to gather myself to make this a career. Getting out and getting into politics also seems like a nice idea as well.

SPC Christopher Smith If you do get into politics keep with the mindset things are not working as you just said. It is refreshing to hear a person with their own mind rather than Jesse and Al saying they speak for everyone all at once.. TY, Larry
