According to Army Times, Lt. Col. Mark Visger's report will recommend no jail time for Bergdahl and no punitive discharge. It also recommends a special court-martial which only allows for a maximum punishment of one year imprisonment and a bad conduct discharge. Do these officers that are speaking out know something we don't, or are there other motivations behind their suggestions?
Personally, I believe there is probably more to the story; however, we need to look at the long term issues that are going to come of this. If the Army doesn't give Bergdahl a punitive discharge, he will still be eligible for benefits. I also believe that it is highly likely that he could receive a medical discharge for psychiatric reasons and end up with a 70+% disability rating that will be paid for the rest of his life. That's not something I want to see come to fruition.

PC be damned. If they want to call his 5 years of visiting with the Taliban jail time; fine...
But a Bad Conduct Discharge, No I would demand a Dishonorable.

No way does time served with an enemy he CHOSE to support should count for his sentence for crimes against THIS country.

SSG Stephen Arnold - I agree, I just don't expect it. Unless the prosecution somehow draws this out until we have a new CIC.......

I agree with you, we were there when this all happened and it came out very quickly what he had done and how he did it... the miserable excuse of "trying to get to a nearby FOB to report his leadership is so completely exaggerated that I am surprised the Investigating Officer supports it. "Hiking" 18 miles over rough terrain without weapon, body armor, or water.... if this is his defense, it is a poor one indeed. His platoon unequivocally told everyone they could reach out to what Bergdahl did... he deserted his post at 0200hrs by low crawling away and then was seen at 1000hrs the next day in a nearby village asking how to be put in contact with the Taliban...
As far as the CIA/FBI conspiracy theory where he might heave been on orders to do so... again, I've worked with them over there in this same exact province... and no, they would NEVER have tried to entice a young inexperienced E-3/E-4 to go out and make contact in this fashion.
